Inner Beauty

These paintings will explore the various ways our concepts of beauty are multilayered; How our inner ideals may change by circumstance, age, or influence of others.

It’s cliche to say that beauty is only skin deep, or that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, or that it’s what’s on the inside that matters. Yet with the explosion of massive new media channels available through computers, mobile devices, tablets, as well as television and film and print- image is everywhere and reflects as well as directs our perceptions of what beauty means.

I believe beauty is about image. It’s an image of what we find valuable and worthy of desire. Whether we adopt that image from a media super highway or purposefully reject societies definition and pursue a subcultures aesthetic or set out to create our own- we all maintain an image of beauty in our minds.

These paintings will explore the various ways our concepts of beauty are multilayered; How our inner ideals may change by circumstance, age, or influence of others. How our perception of others may change as they allow us to see facets of themselves that are only discoverable by the trust gain through time and intimacy. I choose to depict this concept through paintings of various characters enwrapped within each other; revealed through cutaways, cracked shells, and other such motifs. I’ll explore the idea that maybe the most valuable image of beauty is being able to peel away all layers and see ones true self.
